Description
Winter form of Euonymus americanus, American strawberry bush. Port Republic, Maryland, American Chestnut Land Trust.
Euonymus americanus, also known as Strawberry Bush or Bursting Hearts, is a broadleafed evergreen American native understory shrub found in shady forests from New York to Florida and as far west as Oklahoma and Texas. The vivid pink seed capsules open in autumn to reveal brilliant red seeds. See my Forest Gallery for the colorful version of this delicate tree.
Euonymus europaeus, also known as Spindle tree, is a closely related European species and has similar fruits.
